Self Critique ( IN3D Project 1 ) Initial Conception

*** I Separate the parts out for the Self - Critique.
There are together 5 parts. ( 5 Posts) :)

Initial Conception

Before modeling the object, I have chosen. I look at the chosen model, Which is the yellow school bus. I decided to choose this toy because it looks very interesting. At first I didn’t think of how hard or challenging it will be to model the yellow school bus out. I just randomly pick a toy that is nice. After that I re-consider it, on how I am going to model it. I bring it to school for approval. Its approved though, but do I have the confidence to model it out. Am I confident enough with my modeling skill? I ask myself. Personally with what I have learned from the start of school term till now, I am able to model the bus out. By using the skills I had learn during lab. But to say the truth when I modeling it, I had indeed forgotten some of the skills to use. Firstly, my object is approved, I take it as a challenge. So I started playing with the toy bus and started to play with the different parts of the bus, some parts of the bus like the door can be open and close. Its fun. Then follow by analyzing the object part by part. I ask myself what polygon can be use for the different parts of my school bus, should I smooth? Should this be a cube, pipe or cylinder? It can be hard as this is the very first time I am model a real object myself without pdf file or tutorial to follow the steps. Therefore, before we start model we need to complete the project part one first in order to proceed.

I need to consider the difficulty, complexity of my model. In the terms of how many shapes I should use, the types of primitives parts ( wheels, windows), smoothness, this is the amount and type of surface details. The important part is the planning of the technical aspects I have learn in IN3D and is able to apply/develop my model. ( extrusion,Boolean…)

Next, I need to look at the design. Which is how the shape look like. I draw wireframe sketches for my chosen object. This would help me understand the technical of its structure and shape, thus making things easier and less complex. I also draw out the small components of my chosen object like seats, door , wheels. This gives me a visualization on how this small components looks like. Hence it would be easier for me. The small components are counted as a important part in my school bus.

Lastly ,done with all the planning, I need idea. I can’t just base on the knowledge I know. When faced with a new model I need to find out how other people create a similar objects Research is the key part. I go onto google and search for websites, images, videos tutorial to see how other people model the similar bus. But I can’t find it, I just look at wireframe images from people blog and website. I decided to try researching on small components for the wheels, wheel rim, lighting, texture. After researching, I need to understand the approaches taken by them and how different is it from mine. How different approaches might be applied to my own model. The planning and ideation stage is very important. I am able to plan and estimate the time I need to complete my model.I seek help and also refer to my previous lab exercise as a reference too. This initial conception plays a important part for my project part 2.

I am modeling on a toy yellow school bus. I felt very satisfied when I complete my modeling. Looking at how closely my model matches with the original object, it looks almost the same but some of the part of my school bus model can be improve. I give a percentage of 75%. There is a room for improvement. As I have just started using maya. I am just a beginner.
